Hyatt

The sad truth was he had no one to blame but himself for the situation he was in. Not Indiana and certainly not the Dentons. No, it was strictly his fault for allowing things to unfold the way they did, and not doing a thing about it.

Yes, Indiana had wanted to come clean at some point, emboldened with a sense of inner strength and righteousness, but he was the one who dissuaded her, convinced her that the timing wasn’t right and wouldn’t be for a while.

Granted, he thought he was making the right decision, believed in his heart that he just needed to wait a little longer before breaking the news, gently, but with everything that happened the past few months, it became difficult.

A new set of problems arising whenever they wanted to step forth and own up to their decisions, so it became easy to hide, to keep using whatever happened as a sign, a detour before they merged onto the main path.

Now, he realized the timing was never going to be right, but it was too late.

The image of Indiana on the couch, her head thrown back mid-laugh would haunt him, he knew that for certain, and that was on him too because he couldn’t take it back, wouldn’t barge in on her life now and demand they go back, not when it was clear she didn’t want to.

In fact, as hard as it was, it was time for him to do the right and honorable thing and let her go, well and truly, banishing her from his thoughts as well as his life. He knew it wouldn’t be easy, her presence haunting every corner of his apartment, the smell of her perfume lingering as he refused to wash the sheets, holding onto whatever fragments of her that he could.

No more.

It’s time to move on, Hyatt. This is for the best.

Begrudgingly, he had to admit that his conscience had a point, sometimes it did. After all, he was the one who chose to end it, so he couldn’t be the one to stomp in and call for a rewind, a do-over.

Life just didn’t work like that.

Logically, he understood that, but it didn’t stop him from wishing it, praying to whatever gods were listening in that he would have a second chance, to love her right. The entire cab ride he’d spent in sullen silence, coming off the adrenaline high, dropping him with a loud crash.

He’d barely set foot inside his own apartment before he reached for the whiskey decanter, pouring himself a generous glass. A part of him knew that he couldn’t continue to dilute the pain with a stiff drink, but he deserved it right now.

At the end of the day, he didn’t know how else he was supposed to cope with the loss, not when seeing her felt like scratching the wound, keeping it from scabbing it over, the sting shooting up his arm.

He held onto the glass with one hand and used the other to kick off his shoes, stumbling precariously, spilling some of the drink onto the floor.
